May 2026 user metrics

Moving forward I’ll share monthly user metrics in these weekly updates in the first week of each month. While Momentum may not yet do all the things we dream of, we have real users - hundreds of them - who are registering and logging in and adding buildings and doing stuff. What exactly are they doing? This monthly habit is about paying attention to find ways to give them a better experience.

Here are some May 2026 user activity takeaways in case you missed them in Discord last week. Graphs of monthly user metrics are visible in the admin page in Momentum, and I’m keeping a running doc with more detailed notes and snapshots each month.

Good signs in May

• Continued user growth at a more rapid pace than pre-NYCA (400+ unique users in May - our highest ever!)
• Growth in strong users - those who use Momentum frequently and consistently over time. This is a hopeful sign that even if many new NYCA users don’t last, some find real value.
• Highest month ever for scope creation - >300 new scopes in May
• Twice as many projects created in May (32) as in April!
• NYCA continues to dominate new users but Building Innovation Hubs makes a real contribution!

Bad signs in May

• April churn is the highest ever at 65%. Not surprising given many folks just checking it out after NYCA announcements. Note that churn is only accurate looking an extra month back. April churn shows how many users who were active in April did not return in May.
• Fewer actions even though more users, lower actions per user
• Did not see a continuation of building adding spike from April
• Thanks to FH we are starting to get some more detailed insights from Post-Hog: Only 20% of users who visit the registration page make it all the way to the buildings landing page. Why? It seems there are a few drop off points - no clicking on the role selection getting to first step, getting to a pending screen.

Development

• Bug Count (P-0 and P-1): 3, but 2 ready for testing
• Shipped this week:
  • Smarter cost calculations for buildings with multiple meters — We can now model tiered utility costs for sub-metered buildings (e.g., large residential or mixed-use properties with separate meters per unit or system), giving clients more accurate project cost estimates.
  • Boston building performance standard BERDO (building emissions regulation) will now see their required performance targets reflected in our outputs, helping clients understand their compliance obligations. We just need to land the BERDO covered buildings list.
  • Better energy use data for multifamily buildings — We now pull detailed energy breakdown data (heating, cooling, etc.) from our building database for apartment buildings, improving the accuracy of energy analysis.
  • NYCA LL97 public map v0 is ready for playing with. We’re waiting for Willdan and Blenderbox to set up their end of the integration while we add additional features on our end.
  • Questionnaires are live. We rolled out a new Questionnaires feature — a flexible, versioned system that lets programs send structured questionnaires to teams and collect responses directly in the platform. This has been a significant build and is now fully available.

This Week’s Highs and Lows

• The NYCA public map is coming together so well and so quickly! (JMB)
• The new building landing, scope detail, and scope comparison pages are getting close–I can’t wait to turn them on. (JMB)
• Over 500 NYCA Teams have registered for Momentum! (JIB)
• Over 30 NYCA Service Providers have applied to join and submitted documents through Momentum (JIB)
• Chuck and Maks led a smooth transition of our database away from Managed PostgreSQL, which had caused multiple incidents in past months (FH)
• Good news… our customer First Service Energy was very excited about my offer to play a more hands on role in helping them develop projects with Momentum… bad news… they also volunteered that they do not actually use the software much themselves (MZ)

• Conversations with the Willdan ConEd MFEEP and NYCA teams–hopefully we’ll make some progress on data integration and other user flow needs that still need detail. (JMB)
