Frontend Framework Evaluation

Our team has been discussing whether to transition from our Laravel-Livewire-Python stack to a JavaScript framework-Laravel-Python stack for months without reaching a decision. Different stakeholders have different perspectives on timing, necessity, and approach. Varying viewpoints - including priorities, concerns, and motivations - may be contributing to discussions where we’re each speaking from unstated assumptions. We need a structured process to either make this decision or explicitly defer it, so the team can focus its energy appropriately.

  1. Create clarity on when/whether we should transition to a JavaScript framework
  2. Establish concrete evaluation criteria that everyone agrees are valid
  3. Set expectations for implementation timing regardless of decision outcome

To achieve the above business goals, we need to break the cycle of repeated discussions without resolution. Instrumental communication goals for the decision process are to:

  • Uncover and document the true motivations and concerns behind each team member’s position
  • Create a shared understanding of what problem(s) we’re trying to solve with a potential stack change
  • Determine whether we have a genuine technical need or if other organizational factors are driving the debate
  1. Gather individual stakeholder perspectives through 1:1 structured interview (2 weeks)
    • Deliverable: Summary document synthesizing root issues
  2. Facilitate Problem-Focused Meeting (1.5 hours, week 3)
    • Bring stakeholders together to discuss the synthesized root issues
    • Focus on validating the actual problems, not debating solutions
    • Reach consensus on what problems need to be solved
  3. Technical Charrette (1.5 hours, week 4)
    1. Document technical criteria and testable hypotheses
      • Deliverable: timeline for techncial due diligence
    2. Identify solution sets and set timeline for evaluation and decision. We’re so early in this discussion it’s hard to look ahead this far, but I think we will want to discuss:
      • Architecture first (i.e. SPA vs Island Architecture vs hybrid )
      • Packaging: Inertia? React Portals w Vite? Laravel+React “bare metal”?
  4. Follow-ups / actions resulting from Charrette (2 weeks)

Steps: 1. Discovery: Ask questions to understand the proposal. 1. Debate: Explore risks, concerns, alternatives, and identify critical questions related to the actions proposed. 1. Decision: Finalize a “safe to try” approach with consent from all stakeholders.

  • François: approved as safe to try, would love to see owners + dates for the deliverables. I can help with structured interviews if we agree that’s the thing to do. Are we worried folks would not spend time/effort on written questions?
