Had coffee with Joe Chavez, the Deputy Director for the NYC Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice. While we have many stakeholders for the accelerator contract, Joe may be at least tied for the biggest one. He also is the person who most wanted to see the accelerator integrate tech in the way that we are now in the process of doing. Most of our chat was him being a firehose, articulating his vision for the accelerator and me frantically scribbling down notes. Bluedot was not seated at the table. Here is an AI summary of Joe’s vision from my scribbles which I am sure will evolve somewhat over time but I think is worth keeping in mind as we move forward:

Make Momentum the frictionless hub Planning, capital stacking, contractor engagement, and rebate coordination should happen in one coordinated system — reducing time, uncertainty, and drop-off at every step.

Last Week’s Highs and Lows

• We ran a few yellow lights to deliver 115, but it landed well and packs a lot of great new features. (FH, JMB+1)
• Lot’s of 1:1 debriefs with coop board members on Momentum work scopes – videos captured to document how my rules based voice overs can ultimately be baked into the product (MZ)
• High engagement with Akam (largest property manager in NYC) about rolling out Momentum scopes for a pilot of ~50 buildings that they think are best candidates to start with (MZ)
• Constructive meeting with our former subscription customer (Urban American) who wants to work with us to use Momentum to power their deployment of repeatable battery and AC technology in resposne to local grid reliability needs (MZ)

• We have a lot of “almost there” large features or complex clean-ups that need to land soon: EPA Portfolio Manager v2, new BKB supporting buildings beyond Multi-Family, Building Attribute Guesser for NYSERDA, improved tariff support, etc.

• With the NYCA launch coming up, we have two contradictory goals: rushing in a number of new required features, and cleaning-up old tech debt + shoring up security and performance. Even at our current brisk pace, there’s a lot for us to get right in limited time.

• Improving clarity around our roadmap and prioritization process–I’ve started to meet with a PM coach to help me.
• We may have won some minds, and we’re winning some wallets, but will we win their fingers? Which users will actually use our software instead of just looking for the outputs and expecting consultant-style service?
• What is our moat in a world and industry where data wants to be free, especially when some of our largest customers are city and state agencies?
• Getting a clearer sense of our delivery velocity. I anticipate we’ll need to be more responsive to ad hoc customer feedback this year, and this will help me better plan and prioritize our product needs.

• Budget and having a process for team leads to request budget for headcount.
• Onboarding and Integration of all employees and not just new hires should be able to integrate our practices, understand where information can be found, and be clear on what is expected of them. This will strengthen the onboarding and 360 feedback processes. We have been improving and I would like us to continue to progress on these two points.
