Let's Make More New Stuff (yay)

April 11, 2025

I think it was Jeremy who made the point that the past few sprints have felt sort of remedial in that we’re not working on new features, and now we are again. Since I’ve only been back in the code base since mid-Feb, I don’t have much of a context, but I do think it feels good to be rolling out stuff that is visible to users (for me, that was UI refresh)! Getting Program/Project out the door will be even more super duper awesome. And now that NYSERDA and ConEd both want it, we have good reason to double down on it (as soon as Jason gives the green flag)!

One last thought: I’ve been feeling like I’m plugging along by myself on the Generic Project refactor/reskinning. It’s kinda lonely. I literally had to go solicit hugs from my family. So, I’m looking forward to getting shared attention with more folks on a thing!

  • Unique Buildings: 6,222 (March, +162 MoM)
  • Annual Run Rate: $1.31M
  • Monthly net burn (accrual basis): $71,974 (3-month avg through March, -22.57% MoM)
  • Year-to-Last Month net burn (cash basis): $140,356 (-19% MoM)
  • 2025 Transaction fees to date: $3,420 (invoiced, no change WoW)
  • Outstanding invoices as of today: $147,024 (-$152,535 WoW or -50.92% WoW)
  • Marc and I had a good conversation with NYSERDA about the “PTAC app.” It’s more aligned with what we’re doing otherwise–specifically projects–than we thought previously, which is great news! (JB)
  • Generic Projects is moving toward testable again on dev. Hopefully, the Programs side of the tunnel is going to meet it in the right spot and then we can take the flag off in a couple(?) sprints! (two weeks, you guys, two weeks!) BJ
  • ConEd contract recompete is (apparently) moving along at Willdan. I just send over stuff for them to include. BJ
  • Local dev setup can be done in a reasonable amount of time. Yay! Thanks FH and JP for more work on the scripts etc. BJ
  • Briefed and got buy in from con ed on demand generating website project that is very complientary to Momentum (MZ)
  • Robin finished up a cool city scale dump of BKB data into a spreadsheet for kc3 to use to improve their outreach which will help us better understand their potential future software needs relevant to Con Ed recompete (MZ)

Any missing highlights? Please share in Slack comments.

Looking out for icebergs: What are the risks on the horizon that we’re watching for and navigating around?

Largely carryover from last week:

  • NYC Accelerator RFP–this would be a big contract and have impacts on revenue plan and product roadmap.
  • How can we continue to reduce the barriers to giving users useful information? I’m eager to try scraping data out of pdfs and other documents so we can make it easier to get non-public information.
  • Figuring out a sustainable sprint planning routine that allows us to reliably ship on time and to know what will be in the release–and move faster.–> Jeremy’s proposal will hopefully bring us closer to this.
  • Updating our project workflow. We have a better idea of who will be using this now, which is a great start. Now we need to confirm what features they need and those they don’t need.
  • More chatter about adapation > mitigation. This feels both scary at the macro scale–have we missed the tipping point?–but also I think more difficult to streamline with software than decarbonization.

Carryover from last week:

  • On track to have a shortlist of healthcare providers/PEOs for team feedback by the end of the month and to choose a new platform by early May so we can get favorable rates on the insurance market. It’s important to stay on track because if we wait and are within 60 days of our employer open enrollment, brokers will either be unable to get quotes or be limited in what plans they can quote. By mid-May we should have an HR/Benefits partner with healthcare solutions that can scale with the company.
  • Speaking of scale - I am creating scenarios so the team leads can start to think about budget and how they can scale their teams this year. I am meeting with each lead to review monthly so we are all on the same operations page. Leaving these discussions until year-end when we’re trying to think of a bigger budget becomes a larger and more onerous task than it needs to be. Plus, we make decisions year-round and should be able to make more informed decisions year-round.
  • Still on the scale note - We’re a global, remote-first company and support employee movement. However, each location, whether domestic or international, carries hr and tax compliance considerations (and liabilities!) that we must stay abreast of in a timely manner. Worldwide work policies will be added to the handbook soon to help you understand what you should do and be aware of as you consider short and long-term moves.
  • Decision process: We haven’t focused much on honing how we use advice process to make decisions quickly, and it seems like it’s an area that needs some more work!

Same as last week:

  • Getting Marc a product he can sell It will be nice to get FirstServcie under out belt. And then more to come!
  • Cash. Getting paid for Q1 by Willdan is great! But still keenly aware that we have a net burn that we need to minimize.
  • NYCA – waiting…
  • ConEd Recompete Will need to help Willdan win this!
  • The background hum of uncertainty for the housing/construction industry.
  • Macro economic impacts on our business and busineses in general from shit that is going down
  • We need more and better feedback from users and potential users
  • And we need to decide sooner rather than later which types of users will be our primary focus for Q2

Carryover from previous week:

  • NYSERDA data RFP / Building Data Platform: we’re getting started on set up tasks and ingestion of new data, ahead of a meeting with NYSERDA and hopefully a big reveal on the state of their data. It’s exciting to be in a position to leverage our data platform and expand it to support more use cases. We’ll have to be careful to balance the needs of our customer (e.g. statewide, all buildings), and our long-term strategy goals (nationwide and more, multifamily focus).
  • Release 93. Assuming this gets released as planned, it will be a clean-up of CPC Project in anticipation of getting “generic-program / generic-project” (GP-GP? GP^2) moving toward release soonish. Two weeks! LOL. -BJ
  • Bluesky / LinkedIn Marc has been saying for a while that we need to get back out in to social media. I think we can have some fun with Bluesky – more about speaking to our community of practitioners and less about corproate brand than Linkedin! -BJ
  • NYSERDA Data Platform kick-off meeting. Whoot! -BJ
  • NYSERDA PTAC final-really-final-use-this-version-v3 is off to NYSERDA this week. Whoot! Again! -BJ
  • Customer Engagement Kate and Marc will debrief and train KC3 on new bkb output spreadsheet
